So as we get enter and come near to holiday celebrations, office parties, gift exchanges and other end of year fun, how much did you spend, was it more or less then you planned, and was it more or less than last year?

Sorry to ask a rude question, but I am looking for inspiration.

Sounds like you're done with your shopping and spending... good for you! I've still got a few weeks before I'll know my number... – JCarterRN Dec 13 at 21:02
My wife and I are also not done yet. But, I do keep track and will compare notes with last year and post the results. I suspect we'll come in lower -- we've been more careful this year! – Chris W. Rea Dec 13 at 21:08

Oh my goodness you people are so good! It is my New Year's Resolution to finally keep track of my spending and to look my finances right in the eye! I have NO idea what I've spent, but I've been careful not to go overboard with anything, if that counts.

Now that our holiday spending is over, I can say that we spent about 15% less than last year. We accomplished that by agreeing with selected family and close friends to only exchange gifts for the children.

We did about $800 between gifts, a party and travel plans. A bit more than we planned, but less than last year so I am mixed on how we did.

EDIT: I was so proud of myself for only spending $800, then a few last minute gift exchanges and POW $1000 hits me over the head.

So now we spend more than last year and I have 363 days to plan harder for next year.
