Web Search User 2010-07-07T00:05:36Z 2010-07-23T20:00:38Z
How does mint.com connect to online banks in order to get or download banking transaction data?

Do banks have a standard mechanism for mint.com to connect, or is mint.com simulating a real person logging in and using the online banking site?
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/1084/is-there-any-site-to-compare-the-security-of-online-banking-services Is there any site to compare the security of (online) banking services? fennec 2010-02-25T16:04:39Z 2010-05-08T11:02:21Z
I work in the computer industry, and I know a few things about security, like the fact that those "security questions" that you're asked for are pretty much completely bogus and not useful as security. (Besides, I tend to forget little things whether or not I uppercased the P in 'Fluffy the Piranha' for the question about your first pet.)

I'm really somewhat concerned about the state of security of at least one online banking platform. (Me and Bruce Scheiner both, I suppose.) So I'm looking for resources to learn which banks which offer real two-factor authentication (like the little RSA keyfobs, or at least text messages to your phone) to confirm logins, and what other security features they can provide.... real security features, not just security theatre.
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/1014/are-bank-customers-allowed-to-provide-username-password-to-sites-like-mint-com Are bank customers allowed to provide username & password to sites like Mint.com? Chris W. Rea 2010-02-17T03:12:46Z 2010-03-04T14:11:35Z
This question is not about whether Mint.com is secure, or not. That is beside the point. (Refer to this question on the subject of trusting Mint.com and similar services.) Rather:

Are bank customers permitted, under whatever account agreement they typically sign, to provide their username & password or other account credentials to sites like Mint.com?

Would a banking customer be giving up some of the protection offered by their bank if they voluntarily disclosed sensitive account details to a third party service?

Are many people using Mint.com without understanding their responsibilities with respect to protecting their own account credentials? (Call me a skeptic :-)
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/947/which-non-bank-specific-online-money-management-applications-work-for-canadian-ba Which non-bank-specific online money management applications work for Canadian banks? Jedidja 2010-02-07T17:20:59Z 2010-02-22T18:17:22Z
Mint.com has languished for years (over three now) in not supporting Canadian banks. Given that we only have a few, you would think it to be a small amount of work.

Which online banking sites (apart from your own bank's) have people used for Canadian accounts?
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/956/bank-of-the-sierra-are-they-legit-how-can-the-checking-interest-apy-be-so-high Bank of the Sierra: Are they legit? How can the checking interest APY be so high? Tim 2010-02-08T16:53:33Z 2010-02-09T03:28:19Z
As of February 8th, 2009, Bank Of The Sierra offers a free checking account which earns a 4.09% APY. It looks like the catch is that you pretty much have to use them as your main bank. You need to have direct deposit on the account, use their online bill pay for at least one bill and use the debt card at least twelve times a month. If you don't meet these useage requirements you get a much lower 0.12 APY. They only have physical branches in California.

To me they look like a normal bank. But I have trouble finding CD rates that high. Is there anything I should be aware of / look out for if I try to open an account with them? This is the first bank I have ever seen with such a high interest rate, are there others? Are they any better or worse?
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/913/how-easy-is-it-to-open-a-foreign-bank-account-via-the-internet How easy is it to open a foreign bank account via the internet? unknown (google) 2010-02-04T05:37:39Z 2010-02-06T03:55:50Z
Has anyone attempted opening a foreign bank account, if so what was your experience? how easy was it? Which country?
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/820/which-bank-checking-savings-offers-the-best-interest-rates-lowest-fees-and Which bank (checking & savings) offers the best interest rates, lowest fees, and is FDIC insured? Fun2Dream 2010-01-23T03:39:58Z 2010-01-23T06:47:42Z
We currently use ING for our banking and like a lot of its amenities, but their rates (as most banks, I'm sure) keep going down, down, down. The current savings rate is 1.25% APY and checking rate is abysmal, though I can't find the actual rate listed anywhere. When we opened the accounts, the rates were in the 4% range for savings, I think.

It seems like a lot of trouble to switch banks at this point with all of the automatic payments, etc, but if there's a bank out there with good rates, good reviews, and no fees, we will consider it!
http://www.basicallymoney.com/questions/584/how-do-i-know-my-citi-credit-card-account-number-for-setting-up-a-virtual-accoun How do I know my Citi credit card account number, for setting up a Virtual Account Number?
