<p>I work in the computer industry, and I know a few things about security, like the fact that those "security questions" that you're asked for are pretty much <em>completely bogus</em> and not useful as security. (Besides, I tend to forget little things whether or not I uppercased the P in 'Fluffy the Piranha' for the question about your first pet.) </p> <p>I'm really somewhat concerned about the state of security of at least one online banking platform. (Me and Bruce Scheiner both, I suppose.) So I'm looking for resources to learn which banks which offer real two-factor authentication (like the little RSA keyfobs, or at least text messages to your phone) to confirm logins, and what other security features they can provide.... <em>real</em> security features, not just security theatre.</p>

Rather:</p> <p><strong>Are bank customers permitted, under whatever account agreement they typically sign, to provide their username &amp; password or other account credentials to sites like Mint.com?</strong></p> <p>Would a banking customer be giving up some of the protection offered by their bank if they voluntarily disclosed sensitive account details to a third party service?</p> <p>Are many people using Mint.com without understanding their responsibilities with respect to protecting their own account credentials? (Call me a skeptic :-)</p>

<p>As of February 8th, 2009, <a href="https://www.bankofthesierra.com/index.html" rel="nofollow">Bank Of The Sierra</a> offers a free checking account which earns a 4.09% APY. It looks like the catch is that you pretty much have to use them as your main bank. You need to have direct deposit on the account, use their online bill pay for at least one bill and use the debt card at least twelve times a month. If you don't meet these useage requirements you get a much lower 0.12 APY. They only have physical branches in California.</p> <p>To me they look like a normal bank. But I have trouble finding CD rates that high. Is there anything I should be aware of / look out for if I try to open an account with them? This is the first bank I have ever seen with such a high interest rate, are there others? Are they any better or worse?</p>

<p>We currently use ING for our banking and like a lot of its amenities, but their rates (as most banks, I'm sure) keep going down, down, down. The current savings rate is 1.25% APY and checking rate is abysmal, though I can't find the actual rate listed anywhere. When we opened the accounts, the rates were in the 4% range for savings, I think. </p> <p>It seems like a lot of trouble to switch banks at this point with all of the automatic payments, etc, but if there's a bank out there with good rates, good reviews, and no fees, we will consider it!</p>
